Two local teenagers prepare for home run derby nationals

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – Aidan Young and Jacob Gonzalez got the surprise of their life after deciding to compete in a local home run derby.

The pair from MSP Sports Academy won the local event. They went on to the regional in Phoenix, Arizona and won there. Now they are headed to nationals at Petco Park in San Diego during Major League Baseball All Star week.

Their skills on the field got them admission into the 2016 MLB Home Run Derby July 11th.

“Well, I had never thought about that happening and when I heard about it it was like wow,” said Young. “This is just crazy.”

Gonzalez agrees, “I was surprised. I couldn’t really like speak.”

Both players won their regional rounds of the home run derby in dramatic fashion.

Young was behind in the final five pitches of the last round but, hit four homers to win the 12 year old division. Gonzalez was up one homer and had to watch and hope he would not be past up in the last round. He was not and won the 13-year-old division at the regional in Phoenix, Arizona.

The derby is an initiative between MLB and USA baseball to stir up interest in the game among the nation’s youth.
