SANTA FE, N.M. (KRQE) – The trial began on Tuesday for a man charged with a triple murder near Santa Fe.

Nicholas Ortiz is accused of killing 55-year-old Lloyd Ortiz, his wife Dixie, and their 21-year-old son, Steven, with a pick-ax in 2011.

It happened in their El Rancho home, north of Santa Fe. Ortiz, who is not related to the victims, was 16 years old at the time of the murders.

Prosecutors say Ortiz killed the three to steal money and pot from the home.
