RIO RANCHO, N.M. (KRQE) – Prosecutors say they will definitely bring up the past of accused cop killer Andrew Romero at his trial for the murder of Rio Rancho Officer Gregg Benner as long as a judge allows it.

They filed court documents indicating that they will bring up his past convictions that include manslaughter, aggravated assault and drug charges. The state says these documents establish Romero’s motive the day he allegedly shot and killed Officer Benner during a traffic stop.

Romero’s attorney’s plan to fight the introduction of Romero’s criminal past something that is pretty typical in these cases. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
