CANNON AIR FORCE BASE, N.M. (AP) – Air Force Secretary Deborah Lee James is preparing to make her first tandem parachute jump with members of a special unit at Cannon Air Force Base.

Base officials say the jump is scheduled for Tuesday afternoon over the plains of eastern New Mexico. James will be jumping with the 26th Special Tactics Squadron.

The squadron is part of the 24th Special Operations Wing, which Air Force officials say is the most highly decorated group of airmen since the Vietnam War. The group’s members have earned dozens of Purple Hearts and Silver Stars, hundreds of Bronze Stars and several Air Force Crosses.

Cannon spokesman Capt. Brandon Baccam says James is visiting the base to learn how it equips its air commandos and the jump will demonstrate their abilities. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
