Proposed measure to allow mayoral candidates access to more tax dollars

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – Albuquerque city councilors are expected to vote on a measure that would allow mayoral candidates access to more tax dollars to run their campaigns, but only if they qualify for public financing.

As it stands, candidates who opt in can qualify for about $360,000 after getting 3,500 voters to donate at least $5 each.

The new proposal would raise the amount to just over $600,000.

City councilors say this will help level the playing field.

If approved, residents will have the opportunity to vote on the measure in the fall. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
