ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – A mother is accused of leaving her seven-year-old alone at a park for hours.
Parents at the Westside Community Center’s park are angry.
“It’s just terrible,” said Jade Baca.
Baca takes her daughter to play at the park on Isleta near Arenal almost every day. She said she can’t believe someone would leave their child alone there.
“Just to leave your child at a park, I mean there’s weirdos and who knows what could happen to that poor child,” said Baca.
According to a criminal complaint, Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Department went to the park Sunday after getting a call that a boy had been there alone for several hours.
When deputies spoke to the boy, they said he was confused and hungry. The complaint said he also didn’t know his last name, where he lived, or his birthday. He only knew his street name and that his house had a red roof.
“For a little kid he’s just probably scared and my heart goes out to him,” said Baca.
Eventually, the mom showed up at the park. Deputies arrested 25-year-old Carmen Burciaga for child abuse or abandonment.
Burciaga told deputies her son wanted to stop and watch the South Valley Pride Celebration parade.
The complaints said she didn’t want to take her baby out of the car and needed to get groceries so she went to Smith’s down the road and then took the baby home, before coming back to the park.
But witnesses said that was almost three hours after she dropped him off.
For parents like Baca, she can’t understand how this could happen.
“Just don’t do it, it’s common sense,” said Baca. “It’s second nature as a mom to protect your child and not leave them alone anywhere for that amount of time by themselves.”
BCSO said the boy is doing fine and is with a relative.
