Police: Driver slams into grocery store to help shoplifter escape

SANTA FE, N.M. (KRQE) – Santa Fe Police are looking for a getaway driver who helped a suspected shoplifter escape. Driver slams into grocery store 2

The incident happened around 11 a.m. Sunday. Police say a driver rammed his van into the Smith’s near St. Michael’s Drive and Pacheco Street to help 22-year-old Raeann Tapia escape.

According to the police report, Tapia tried to make off with a cart full of shrimp and detergent when an employee confronted her. That’s when police say she punched the employee in the neck.

The employee told police that Tapia was calling out, “Babe,” when a van rammed into the doors of the grocery store.

Police say Tapia left with nothing and was later arrested. However, police are still searching for the driver.

No injuries were reported.
