Old Town to host Route 66 birthday celebration

Route 66 Exhibit

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – Old Town will be the place to be this weekend if you’re a big fan of Route 66 nostalgia.

The city is celebrating the 90th birthday of the bygone Route 66 with an exhibit at the Albuquerque museum. The exhibit will highlight the art and history of the “Mother Road” and look at the place it holds in popular American culture.

“It was so important and one of the first cross country roads that really moved people around the country and so it was termed the ‘Mother Road,'” said Cathy Wright, of the Albuquerque Museum.

The Old Route 66 runs 16 miles through Albuquerque, which is its longest stretch through a city.

There will also be vintage car shows, a sock hop, and retro movie nights during the weekend event.

The museum exhibit opens Saturday and runs into early October.
