'Architecture Trails' highlight state's diverse buildings

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – Just in time for summer, get ready to hit the road. The New Mexico Tourism Department has created another trail for you to crisscross the state.

Building on New Mexico’s Green Chile Cheeseburger Trail and Breakfast Burrito Byway, travelers can now embark on the New Mexico True Architecture Trails.

It highlights buildings that aren’t just adobe, but Victorian, classical and modern architectural styles from across the state.

“We feel that New Mexicans might even be surprised at the different things they can see as they travel the state,” said Rebecca Latham, cabinet secretary for the New Mexico Tourism Department.

“We know that consumers want advice over information. Trails are an easy way, a literal road map if you will, for us to connect dots for travelers based on their interest,” she explained.

“We expanded the trail so to include iconic homes and landmarks that are influenced by other types of architecture that began to appear with the arrival of the railroad in the late 1800s,” she said.

“In a lot of ways, architecture in New Mexico, like New Mexico itself, represents a pretty distinctive and unique and very, very dynamic and rich culture, but it also represents all of the kinda of many facets that are in that culture,” explained Brian Goldstein, assistant professor of architecture at the University of New Mexico.

“Just as we should understand New Mexico as more than one group of people or more than one kind of city, we really should understand it as more than one kind of architecture, too,” he said.

New Mexico MainStreet’s “Off the Road in New Mexico” also highlights different architectural attractions.
