ENMU fraternity donates to new stadium

PORTALES N.M. (KRQE) – Usually when a frat raises big money it’s for charity, a party or maybe a trip, but one group decided  to give back to their own school to help pay for a new football stadium.

Students at Eastern New Mexico University say it’s been a long time coming.

“It’s come a long way since I first got here in August and it’s looking really nice so I’m excited to see the final product,” said ENMU Student Joshua Salazar.

Construction is almost done on their new football stadium and one group on campus says they are proud to be a part of it.

“It’s huge to support the school and then we have several brothers that are a part of the Eastern athletic program and we are huge supporters of every sport,” said Tyler Herring, Kappa Sigma president.

ENMU’s Kappa Sigma fraternity recently donated $2,500 of fundraising money to help pay for the $14 million stadium.

“It’s awesome to know that Kappa Sigma’s are what helped get the stadium brought to eastern and to help just continue that tradition of having a good time and celebrating and again supporting eastern athletics,” said Herring.

That donation is just an installment. The frat hopes to pitch in a total of $10,000 over the next three years.

KRQE News 13 has told you before about the school scaling back on the stadium design because there wasn’t enough money for some of the things they had originally planned for like a hospitality suite atop the press box.

The money raised by the frat won’t be going toward that, but the group hopes it will get their name on something in the stadium.

“We are looking at either getting the concession stand or something with Kappa Sigmas title on it so that way we can show not only our support for to eastern but as well as the stadium,” said Herring.

ENMU says everything is still on track for the stadium to be finished for the opener September 10th. The school is still trying to raise $2 million to add the hospitality suite.
