‘Mountain coaster’ planned for Sandia Ski Area

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – If all goes as planned, you’ll be able to get your thrills atop Sandia Mountain. A special coaster is in the works for the ski area, but it’s not a traditional roller coaster.

The “mountain coaster” would be located on the east side of the mountain, according to Ben Abruzzo, general manager of the Sandia Ski Area.

“A mountain coaster uses the terrain of the mountain to provide the enjoyment,” he said.

“In a normal roller coaster, they’re really tall. In a mountain coaster, they’re only normally six to seven feet off the ground and they follow the topography of the mountain,” Abruzzo explained.

A master plan will be submitted this fall to the U.S. Forest Service. By early winter, public comment is expected to be formally taken. That is followed by an environmental assessment in the spring.

An opening date is expected in the summer of 2018 at the earliest.

“I think it’s great because it’s another way to recreate in the mountain,” he said.

The rider of the yet-to-be-named “mountain coaster” will be in control during the ride. Speeds can reach up to 30 miles an hour.

The company Wiegand Sports has similar attractions across the country and Europe.
