Marcantel Murder Plot
Department of Corrections Secretary Gregg Marcantel

SANTA FE (KRQE) – KRQE is learning more about the alleged plot to murder Department of Corrections Secretary Gregg Marcantel and just how close the prison gang behind the plot came to succeeding.

Members of Syndicado Nuevo Mexico, including reported leader Anthony Ray Baca and 11 others, are accused of plotting to kill Marcantel and another top prison official to “gain national recognition and respect.”

According to recently unsealed court documents the gang had researched where Marcantel and the other official lived, had secured a gun to do it, and identified a fellow gang member to do it. The gang planned to kill the assassin with a lethal dose of heroin afterward and then plant the murder weapon on him to cover it up.

The gang members are facing charges for the alleged murder plot as well as other murders, assaults, drug dealing, and other crimes allegedly committed.

Syndicado Nuevo Mexico was created in the early 1980’s and not only operates behind bars but reaches members across the state still loyal to their mission and crimes.
