Albuquerque Public Schools’ ‘Signing Day’ celebrates students

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – Albuquerque Public Schools held a different kind of signing day for academic over-achievers.

It’s part of National Academic Signing Day for students who earned a full ride to college because of their grades.

New Superintendent Raquel Reedy says the district wants to show students it’s proud of them.

Some seniors say they faced a lot of obstacles to get here. “Being an immigrant from Mexico, having a difficult language barrier, and having to spend multiple hours doing English homework just to reread the curriculum,” explained Luis Sanchez Martinez who received a college scholarship.

More than a dozen students received full scholarships to schools including The University of New Mexico, The Naval Academy in Maryland, and BYU. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
