Ruidoso to launch new trolley service by summer

RUIDOSO N.M. (KRQE) – The picturesque village of Ruidoso is expected to launch its new trolley service this summer to help ferry tourists up and down town but it may not be the kind of trolley you’re picturing.

Downtown Ruidoso on a warm summer day can be a very busy place. Locals and tourists can drive around in circles to find a parking spot. That could change soon, with something you’d see at a zoo or amusement park.

Michael and Robin Kephart hope to bring a trolley transport to the mountain village.

“We’re bringing a motorized tram that will run from the upper canyon down to midtown with several stops in the midtown area,” said Michael.

The trolley will make stops at five businesses around town. It will cost $5 a person and run during the day from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. from May to September.

The Kepharts’ hope the trolley will be a draw for tourists who want to explore midtown without dealing with all the traffic.

“With the tram you can hop on, shop on the end, hop the middle, shop on the other end, and just really take a break from all the walking,” said Robin.

Many people in Ruidoso support the idea.

“Will definitely help with all the traffic you have and yeah I think it’s a really good idea and it will help all the tourists that come in,” said Cyndi Cleaver, Ruidoso resident.

“It’s my first time here but instead of us driving down here we could just hop on and visit, see what we need to do here and then go back without driving or getting lost,” said Robert Garza, who was visiting Ruidoso for the first time.

Some say they like the idea but think they should re-think the price of the fares.

“I think it sounds like a great idea because there is not much parking down here but I think it’s priced way too high,” said Susan Dach, who is visiting Ruidoso.

The Kepharts are also bringing in a double-decker bus for tours of Ruidoso and a Hummer limo for weddings and special events.

The village approved all these ideas.
