Bradbury settles into Lobo women’s basketball job

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – The University of New Mexico Women’s Basketball team and new coach Mike Bradbury are just getting to know each other.

When talking about the workouts, Guard Cherise Beynon said, “very intense workouts, fast paced. I just think we have to get use to it. Right now I think all the girls are liking where we are going with him being such a tough coach and wanting us to learn it very quickly.”

Bradbury can see the eagerness to learn in his players.

“They’ve been very receptive, worked hard, picked up quickly,” said Bradbury.

Bradbury has a familiar face to help in the transition with assistant Valerie King now in the mix. King has worked for Bradbury the last nine years and also played for him.

“She was a great player so she will get their respect right away,” said Bradbury.”She knows exactly the way we are going to do it.”

With her relationship with Bradbury and the beauty of New Mexico, getting King to follow Bradbury from Wright State was not a tough sell.

“I think it is just a special place,” said King. “You hear about the tradition and everything they have done in the past. It’s just exciting to be a part of it.”

The past includes winning championships and it sounds like the Lobos will try to shoot their way to the glory days of the past. That is just fine for some of the players.

“I think it’s exciting, said Beynon. “I mean everyone wants to score. That’s why you play basketball, to score. It’s never been defense. But I am still going to have my defensive mentality but at the same time, we are all just trying to score. I think that’s what we like so much about this coach is he wants to put up a lot of shots.”

Coach King’s specialty as a player and coach has always been the three point shot.

The Lobos struggled shooting the ball during parts of last season. If that is corrected, maybe the Lobos will be hoisting a championship trophy sooner than later.

“I am always excited to compete for championships,” said King. “If you are any kind of competitor I think that is what you want. I think that is another thing that Mike and I bring. I love to win and I hate to lose.”
