Teen dies in rollover car crash near Hobbs

HOBBS, N.M. (KRQE) – New Mexico State Police responded to a fatal car crash near Hobbs early Sunday.

Police said that they responding to a crash at about 3 a.m. near mile marker 48 on State Road 18, just south of Hobbs.

According to a release, their initial investigation shows that a vehicle driven by Rene Caraveo, 17, was heading southbound when Caraveo swerved to miss striking a dog. The vehicle rolled several times, ejected passenger Wesley Leija, 18, also of Hobbs. Leija was not wearing a seatbelt.

Caraveo was transported to Lea Regional Hospital. Leija was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The crash is still under investigation.
