University near I-40 reopened after SWAT situation

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – The man responsible for shutting down a section of University in northeast Albuquerque was arrested Wednesday morning after police and SWAT were called out to a local motel.

Police say detectives located a stolen car near the Motel 6, but when detectives tried to speak with the man inside, he took off.

They say 21-year-old Alejandro Monclova barricaded himself inside one of the rooms there. Police also nabbed another suspect who was in the car.

Police say they were told Alejandro usually carries a gun with him. He refused to come out, SWAT was called and negotiators attempted to reach him.

KRQE News 13 was on scene overnight and heard flashbangs and officers commanding someone to come out.

After three hours, the standoff ended peacefully.

Monclova was arrested and now faces several charges including transferring a stolen motor vehicle.
