April brings awareness to importance of donating organs

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE)- April is Donate Life Month to create awareness on how to increase living donations.

Dr. Eduardo Alas and Joanna Saczek RN joined KRQE’s This Morning team to talk about the transplant process. Watch above.

People of most races and ethnicity’s in the U.S. donate in proportion to their representation in the population. The need for transplant in some groups, however, is disproportionately high, frequently due to a high incidence of conditions such as high blood pressure or diabetes, both of which can lead to the need for a kidney transplant.

Donors can be family, friends or a spouse. A living donor kidney transplant is the preferable option for most recipients as the outcomes are generally better.
