ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – Police say the man who barricaded himself inside an apartment complex in southeast Albuquerque had a BB gun in his possession and has surrendered peacefully.
The man was identified as 30-year-old Gabriel Duarte.
Foothills Area Command officers and SWAT teams responded to a call to a male subject who had barricaded himself inside an apartment on Western Skies Drive on Sunday morning.
A woman had called police reporting that Durate stopped by uninvited, and threatened her and her children with a gun. The woman and her children were able to run to safety when officers arrived on scene.
Duarte had a prior arrest record which included domestic violence charges and auto theft. He also had an outstanding felony warrant for a prior domestic violence incident. Charges stemming from Sunday’s incident include domestic violence, kidnapping, and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
SWAT and Crisis Negotiators worked to get the male to exit and into custody after a five and a half hour SWAT stand-off.
Officials advised residents and travelers to avoid the area.
Any residents at the Casa Bella apartment complex were asked to stay inside their apartments and to follow the instructions by officers on scene.
