AUGUSTA, Ga. (WJBF) – It’s a Masters tradition that still has some people puzzled. What are those golf carts doing outside of nearly every business? News Channel 6’s Renetta DuBose searched for an answer to a practice we’ve all grown accustomed to here in the Garden City.

It’s a Washington Road staple, a tradition, if you will. Golf carts parked outside of businesses during Masters Week. To others, it’s still a mystery. So, we investigated the Club Car tradition.

“They just sit here and we take a break,” James Kennedy said laughing while sitting in a Club Car parked outside of CVS near Augusta National Golf Club.

Trudy Sumner traveled from Michigan to Augusta for the first time during Day 1 of the tournament, but she wasn’t shocked at the additions to businesses.

“We have our own golf cart at our house and we go up and down our roads all the time so I think it’s great,” she said.

Driving his own Club Car around Augusta National to transport walking patrons for money, Travis Blitchington just knew he had an answer.

“Club Cars are here because the Masters,” he said.

Yes, it’s Masters week and one thing you can count on besides a good sporting event are golf carts lined up along the CSRA’s main road. But we found out many people have no idea why.

“I don’t know. Older people like me we use them to sit down and rest for a little while,” Kennedy said.

Right outside T-Bonz Steakhouse sits two Club Cars. Front House Manager Bertresa Teasley said the carts bring the restaurant a lot business too. And while the two that are displayed outside the restaurant don’t move, restaurant workers have used working golf carts in the past.

“During this week, our primary parking lot is for our guests. And with that being said a lot of our employees have to park in our extended parking, which is about a block away, so they will use the cart to make sure they’re being transported safely to and from their cars,” Teasley said.

The tradition stretches from right outside of Augusta National Golf Club to beyond I-20, even in Evans where Club Car is located and we find our answer to the mystery.

Club Car Director of Marketing Mike Cotter explained, “25 years ago we got a call one day from a local business that said ‘hey, is there any chance we could borrow a Club Car golf cart and put it out in front of our business?’ They were trying to do a promotion trying to get people kind of excited and had a golf themed event planned, so we looked around and said sure we can go and do that. So, we put a car in and the business next-door and said can we get one of those too.”

Around 100 Club Cars line Washington Road now at no expense to the businesses. It helps market the company to visitors who stop here from around the globe and boost the local economy.

“We want to help support them during this time to draw attention and maximize their revenues and get as many patrons as possible to stop in,” Cotter told us.

Here’s another thing we found out. A lot of businesses aren’t sure why the Club Cars are sitting outside, but they want to join in on the Masters Week fun. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
