SANTA FE (KRQE) – The Green Chile Club, meant to spread a New Mexico staple to out-of-staters longing for a taste of home, is now feeling the heat from angry customers.
When Jaime Dean started the business, he says he did so with the best of intentions.
“The whole idea of the Green Chile Club was to take what we miss, that we long for and bring it to our home that isn’t in New Mexico anymore,” said Dean.
Last year, he took his business plan to Kickstarter with the goal of reaching $35,000. When that campaign failed, he tried to launch the business anyway.
“We had dozens of emails that said, oh if this would’ve worked, I would like to have done this. I stepped back and looked at the numbers and said, I think we’ll get there,” said Dean
But months after launching, it’s clear there are a lot of problems. Customers have flooded the company’s Facebook page with complaints after they didn’t get the green chile they paid for.
“I feel horrible as a business person,” said Dean
Dean says the company simply didn’t get enough subscribers to make the business model work.
“They were the key to shipping as far as green chile. When our subscriber base is coming down, not bringing up the revenue it put us in a cash crunch,” said Dean
Customers also say Dean hasn’t responded to them. Dean says he tried at first but gave up after the tone of some of the messages.
“I’m getting emails saying, ‘You better not come to Hawaii or you’re going to get into some trouble here’,” said Dean
Dean insists he’s trying to make things right. He says he’s working on finding a way to give people a refund, but for the moment he has to find a way.
“It’s enough money where I can’t come up with it. I don’t have it right now,” said Dean
Despite all the problems, Dean insists he wants to still try to make the chile business work.
