ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – The first of three games lived up to the hyped.
The University of New Mexico Lobos and Fresno State Bulldogs are the top two teams in the Mountain West and played like it Friday. The Lobos won game one over the Bulldogs 2-1. The game was a pitcher’s duel with Bulldogs pitcher Ricky Tyler Thomas going up against Carson Schneider of the Lobos. Schneider struck out six, allowing 5 hits in a run in 8 and a third innings of work.
The first run of the game came in the bottom of the fourth inning after Lobo Jared Mang singled to right center to bring Chris DeVito across the plate. The Lobos added to that total in the 8th inning when Carl Stajduhar singled to left. That allowed Jared Holley to score. That run would be the difference in the game. Brody Russell drove in Scott Silva for the visiting Bulldogs in the top of the 9th inning.
That was as close as the Bulldogs would get. With the win the Lobos improved to 10-3 in the Mountain West and 21-9 overall. The Bulldogs drop to 9-4 in conference play and 21-10 overall. Game two is Saturday at Santa Ana Star Field at 2 p.m.
