National Education Association President talks on teacher evals

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) KRQE News 13 asked the president of the country’s largest teacher’s union about her take on New Mexico’s controversial teacher evaluations.

“They’re very discouraged they feel very disrespected they feel like everything they’ve done has been reduced to a standardized test score,” said National Education Association President Lily Eskelsen Garcia.

Eskelsen Garcia spoke with KRQE News 13 on the matter.

Teacher evaluations are based on several things including attendance and tests scores. The Public Education Department says they’re necessary to hold teachers accountable.

Teachers have protested, saying they’re unfair.

We asked Eskelsen Garcia how she thought the state should weed out bad teachers.

“Processes where teachers will come in, train teachers and evaluate their peers give them information about how they can become better teachers,” said Eskelsen Garcia. “If they can’t there are processes that have to terminate a teacher that can’t or won’t do the job that they were hired to do.”

Eskelsen Garcia is a guest speaker at the largest ever community schools conference being held in Albuquerque this week.

The event centers on schools like Emerson Elementary, which offers an onsite after school program in cooperation with the Boys and Girls Club. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
