ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – As many kids are heading back to school after a week of spring break, a new study suggests that kids’ social media and video game usage could effect their sleep event after the vacation is over. But a local professor says it can be prevented.
For years researchers have said that teens who play video games or go on social media right before bed take longer to fall asleep. But according to an Reuters article which factors in whether the teens were night or a morning people, the evidence shows it effects both type of personalities.
Assistant Professor Ryan Kelly from the University of New Mexico says continuously not getting enough sleep can have a long term effect on kids’ minds and overall health.
For parents, Kelly suggests pulling the kids away from video games or social media an hour or two before bed, even during the weekends and on vacations.
“I think one of the most important things that you can do is create a consistent sleep schedule. So that’s going to bed at the same time every night or at least within a half hour window and waking up at the same time. That would include weekends as well,” Kelly said.
Researchers say it all comes down to how engaging video games and social media can be, causing it to be mentally alerting and emotionally engaging, making it harder for kids and teens to wind down and fall asleep.
