Librarian aims to bolster New Mexico’s Wikipedia presence

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – It is one of the first sites that comes up when you search online for information about people or places, so why not use it to spread the word about people and places in New Mexico?

The University of New Mexico is hosting an edit-a-thon on Thursday, Apr. 7 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. to teach people how to post to Wikipedia.

“As a librarian, I help people find information resources all the time,” said UNM Assistant Professor and Librarian, Laura Soito.

She wants to help people take information in print that is tucked away in libraries and share it on Wikipedia, a site consistently ranking among the top ten most visited online.

“It’s like a community book but online,” said Ansely Emeanuwa, a student at UNM.

However, Soito thinks there is so much more that can be added about New Mexico.

“Lots of the New Mexico State Parks have stub pages,” Soito said.

The most popular pages last month related to New Mexico were for T.V. shows “Better Call Saul” and “Breaking Bad,” filmed in Albuquerque.

Soito wants to improve pages that aren’t getting much attention, or ones that are but are also really lacking in information.

“I think it’s good to highlight things that are local and of interest to people here,” she said.

Soito hopes Thursday’s event will be the first of a series of edit-a-thons.
