Thief uses truck, giant pot in smash and grab burglary at art store

ELDORADO, N.M. (KRQE) – It’s devastating video for Mekah Gordon to watch.

“I can’t even remember anyone coming in and just stealing a bar of soap,” Gordon. “It hurts. I mean, of course it hurts.”

Now Gordon’s dealing with a lot worse than that.

On surveillance video early Wednesday morning, you can see someone drive a truck into the window of Gordon’s store, Eclectics Art Gallery in Eldorado.

On the video a man busts in soon after and starts quickly taking all of the gold and silver jewelry he can, scooping it into what looks like a tamale pot.

From there, he comes back for seconds, grabbing even more jewelry.

“The items that he took were a lot of gold bracelets, pendants and rings. Also, a lot of silver pieces with precious and semi-precious stones,” said Gordon.

What made it hurt even more is that the jewelry was made by Gordon herself.

“Losing that is heartbreaking because, I put so many hours into constructing these pieces and some of them I had for a really long time,” said Gordon.

Now instead of showing off her work, she has to put up a wooden board to cover up the broken window where the car hit her shop.

The store’s hoping the surveillance video will help deputies catch whoever did this. It’s a case where the glass isn’t the only thing this thief broke.

“This character came in and he just broke my heart,” said Gordon.

The total value of all the merchandise stolen is an estimated $80,000.

Gordon says her insurance should cover some of the damage. She will use some of the money to buy more material to make jewelry
