Albuquerque Girl Scouts help local shelter during spring break

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – A group of local Girl Scouts are using their spring break to help homeless pets.

On Tuesday, Troop 10-3-91 donated food, hand-made toys and beds to the city’s eastside animal shelter. It’s currently housing around 500 animals that range from dogs, to cats, to snakes.

Troop leaders say it’s a way for the girls to earn a badge and learn how to be a future pet owner.

“Several of the girls thought it would be great to give back to the animals who don’t have a home,” Girl Scout Troop Leader Heather Sickenger said.

Animal welfare is also teaming up with the scouts to join their companion reading program, where the kids come in and read to the animals. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
