Man accused in beating death case accepts plea deal

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – A suspect charged with the beating death of an Albuquerque man has accepted a plea deal.

Phillip Martin is one of several suspects accused of robbing then beating 65-year-old Richard Zarate to death in 2014. The victim’s family found Zarate’s body inside his home on shire near 114th and Central.

On Thursday, the murder charge against Martin was dropped since he did not take part in Zarate’s death. However, he pleaded no contest to numerous other charges related to the robbery, including using Zarate’s credit card.

Martin will be sentenced at a later date.
