Apartment Damaged by Fire
Albuquerque fire crews are trying to figure out what caused a family’s apartment to go up in flames. It happened just after 2:30 Saturday morning on Menaul near Chelwood Park in the northeast part of town. AFD says when crews arrived there were flames shooting out of the roof. The apartment was damaged. Crews were able to save the units nearby. No one was hurt, however the cause of the fire is under investigation.
Two former political workers for Governor Susana Martinez say they fear retaliation after cooperating with a federal investigation. The investigation surrounded funds Jay McCleskey made as a consultant during the governor’s 2011 campaign. Republican campaign fundraisers Andrea Goff and Cecilia Martinez sent letters to the U.S. attorney’s office in Albuquerque, saying they are fearful for their safety after experiencing harassment linked to the federal probe. An attorney for McCleskey says the investigation into fundraising violations is over and no charges are forthcoming.
Zika Case Confirmed in NM
State health officials say a Bernalillo county man has tested positive for the zika virus. They say he got it while traveling to Central America. Officials say the 46-year-old man got sick while he was in El Salvador. The man’s doctor suspected he had contracted the virus because of his symptoms. The department of health sent the man’s labs to Colorado to get tested by the CDC. Those test results just came back positive. Officials say the man is doing fine now. They say there is no reason to believe anyone else in New Mexico has been infected. For healthy adults, Zika is not very serious. Pregnant women are at a higher risk as the virus has been linked to serious birth defects.
