BERNALILLO COUNTY, N.M. (KRQE) – Bernalillo County Sheriff’s deputies say they are now in contact with the family of a little girl who was found alone on the side of the road by firefighters.
Battalion Commander for the Bernalillo County Fire Department, Tony Pittarelli, said the 4-year-old girl was crying and shaken up.
“She saw the lights of them responding to another call,” Pittarelli said. “So the little girl tried to run away from them, obviously she was scared.”
“I know those guys were upset. They wanted to know why this little girl was out there and they did everything in their power to protect her at the time,” he added.
Officials say the girl, who has been identified as Unique, was found just after midnight on Friday. They say Bernalillo County firefighters spotted her while they were responding to a different call at Sandia Casino. They stayed with Unique and reported it to the Sheriff’s Office.
Afterwords Unique’s story spread through social media. Officials say they were contacted by a family member reporting the girl missing.
According to BCSO, Unique was spending the night at a relative’s house. Relatives say she left the house after she was put to bed. The relative thought the girl had been picked up by her mother early in the morning. When they reached out to Unique’s mother, relatives realized Unique was missing and contacted police.
BCSO says there have been no arrests at this time.
Unique will stay in Children, Youth and Families’ custody until the investigation is complete.
“We want to know the circumstances behind why she was left alone and make sure that this doesn’t happen again,” Deputy Felicia Romero said. “Our special victims unit has been working tirelessly since this morning and we’re going to continue to work until we get some answers.”
“We will not let her go back to an unsafe environment, or a dangerous situation,” she added.
