Former deputy arraigned on battery charges

SANDOVAL COUNTY, N.M. (KRQE) – A former Sandoval County Deputy accused of slapping a teen in the face was arraigned on battery charges on Thursday.

Prosecutors say in August, then Deputy Fred Switzer, was putting a seatbelt on a handcuffed teen after a court appearance.

The sheriff’s department says it appears the teen spit on Switzer. That’s when the deputy slapped him in the face and hit the teen another four times.

A supervisor nearby saw what happened and reported the incident.

If convicted, Switzer faces up to six months in prison. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
