Albuquerque Public Schools’ gender identity proposal sent to committee

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – The proposal to change APS’ policy to accommodate transgender kids is heading to the Superintendent’s Leadership Committee.

Thursday night, the school board discussed changing its policy but according to the Albuquerque Journal, their role was merely to advise district administrators on the proposal.

The new proposed policy would allow students who identify as female to use the girls’ restroom, and those who identify as male to use the boys’ restroom. That was a concern for some board members and some parents. However, most in the district are open to the changes.

The policy also covers dress code, stating students can dress according to their gender identity. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
