Lobo Women’s Basketball ready for a run

LAS VEGAS (KRQE)- No matter what their record is, the Lobo Women’s Basketball team always seems to play some of their best basketball when the Mountain West Tournament rolls around.

As a program, the Lobos have won five tournament championships. No other team in the league can claim that honor or even come close.

“You know it’s tournament time,” said head coach Yvonne Sanchez.”If you are not fired up and motivated for this you go to go home.”

The Lobos will go into the tournament after winning their last two games and finishing the regular season at 16-13. They finished the Mountain West season at 9-9.

The Lobos, a five seed, will meet San Jose State, a four seed, in the quarterfinals on Tuesday. The two clubs split the season series with both winning at home.

“We just got to hit shots,” said Sanchez. “We got to get the ball inside and get them in foul trouble and go from there.”The Lobos won by 14. The Spartans won by only one. “They feel like they can beat us and we feel like we can beat them,” said Lobo forward Khadijah Shumpert. “It’s definitely going to be a battle.”

Monday the conference gave the Lobos good news ahead of their game on Tuesday. Guard Cherise Beynon was named to the All Mountain West First Team. Forward Khadijah Shumpert was selected to the All Defense First Team. She was also honorable mention all conference. Center Jaisa Nunn was named to the All Freshman Team.
