ALAMOGORDO N.M. (KRQE)- It’s like baseball with an interesting twist. The Otero County Sheriff’s Office and the Holloman Air Force Base Fire Department got together for a game of “donkey baseball.”
“It was loads of fun. I had so, so much fun. I didn’t think falling off a donkey would be so much fun but hey it was wonderful,” said Jessica Turner with the Otero County Sheriff’s Department.
It’s a lot like regular baseball but players are on the back of donkeys, except for the pitcher and the catcher. With the donkeys constantly bucking, jumping and bolting, players found out it was much harder than they expected.
“You can’t control a donkey, you just can’t,” said Turner.
It did give the crowd a lot of laughs, as people from Alamogordo gathered at the fairgrounds to watch the deputies and firefighters go at it.
It was a close game with the Holloman firefighters coming out on top with a home run in the last inning to win the game 9-7.
“This was a fairly competitive group to start with so it was kind of fun to actually win even though it was one of those no win type of deals,” said Fletcher Dahman with the fire department.
The animals came were with Dairyland Donkey Ball out of Wisconsin. Profits from the game went towards the Alamogordo Optimist Club’s youth programs.
“I think it turned out real well… I think it’s better than last year and I think probably the next one will be even better,” said Doug Brinkley, president of the Optimist Club.
Dairyland Donkey Ball also puts on donkey basketball games and donkey racing.
