Site where Sheriff Pat Garrett was killed at risk

LAS CRUCES, N.M. (KRQE)– The site where Sheriff Pat Garrett was killed could be in danger of vandalism and possible development.

Garrett is famous for gunning down the legendary outlaw Billy the Kid.

Though the circumstances surrounding Garretts his death are unclear, 108 years ago he was murdered himself.

The site of that murder in east Las Cruces has not been preserved and history buffs fear new home development and vandalism may overtake it.

The New Mexico Historical Society said it is not aware of any plans to preserve the site, which includes a cross and some concrete with the dates carved in it.
