THOREAU, N.M. (AP) – Authorities say a Crownpoint man has been arrested for allegedly driving a vehicle with a blood-alcohol level five times over the state’s legal limit.
New Mexico State Police say 37-year-old Elbert Smith was taken into custody Feb. 16 in Grants after being stopped while driving in the Thoreau area.
Police say Smith had multiple open containers of alcohol inside his vehicle and displayed signs of impairment during sobriety tests.
After Smith was arrested, police say he blew a .40 on a breath test and was taken for a medical clearance due to his excessive alcohol level.
He was booked in the Cibola County Detention Center on charges of DWI, having an open container of alcohol, driving without insurance and other charges.
It was unclear Tuesday if Smith has a lawyer.
