Albuquerque driver claims she was blinded by laser pointer

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – It’s a dangerous trick that’s affected pilots for years, people shining laser pointers at them. Now an Albuquerque driver said it happened to her at the busy intersection of Wyoming and Academy.

“There was this flash of green and it made me almost hit the woman in front of me,” said Kim Gorman.

Gorman claims she spotted a woman and teenagers in the SUV next to her. She said the kids were holding a laser pointer and laughing.

“It’s not a funny thing,” said Gorman. “It’s not a joke.”

Airplanes struck by laser beams has been an ongoing problem for years. It’s even happened at the Sunport.

But on the road, Albuquerque Police call it unusual.

“This is fairly new to us,” said Officer Tanner Tixier.

While it’s a felony to point lasers at planes, police said it’s not as clear cut for a car.

“The issue at this point is there’s really no law against it,” said Officer Tixier.

The Albuquerque Police Department said at most they could probably ticket someone for interference with a driver, which is a misdemeanor.

But Gorman said she watched car after car get hit by the light.

“She swerved over and almost hit the curb because you could tell it was a jerk that happened and I’m positive she got hit by the same thing,” said Gorman.

A prank she said isn’t funny and could carry extreme consequences.

“You can seriously hurt someone or kill someone,” said Gorman. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
