ROSWELL, N.M. (KRQE) – Should a school picture cost more for students who want to ditch their school uniforms, and wear outfits they want to wear?
That’s happening at a New Mexico public school and unhappy parents want to know why.
The uniform at Sunset Elementary in Roswell is a pretty common one, dark or khaki pants or skirts and a solid colored polo. However, for picture day some students want to show their unique style.
“I wore this jean shirt and some leggings and my black boots,” said student Lisette Landaverde.
The school offered students a choice. For the low price of just a dollar, students can wear what they want.
Some parents are all for it. “I don’t have any problem with paying one dollar, It’s just one dollar,” said Fatima Carrillo, Lisette’s mother.
Other parents don’t like it, out of principle. They say families, that don’t want to pay up, risk having their kids feeling left out. They also believe the whole point of the school uniform is to avoid these issues and so kids don’t judge each other by their clothes.
Other families think it’s time for the uniforms to go anyway.
“The school uniform thing should thrown out completely. Children should be allowed their individualism,” said Donald Henry, grandparent of a Sunset Elementary student.
The dollar that students pay to wear what they want goes to the school. It will be used to pay for field trips.
