CHARLES CITY, Iowa – Seeing a dog in a classroom isn’t very common, but it’s becoming a trend at one local elementary.
Meet Zen, she’s one of two dogs visiting Washington Elementary. Students read books to them in order to help build confidence in their skills. They are trained therapy dogs.
Student says she looks forward to spending time with her four-legged friends and loves reading to them.
“I like to read because it keeps me healthy and it also makes me smarter every day,” Mikenna Wiltse said.
The program has been in place since January. It’s open to all grades within the elementary.
