Children hold wedding ceremony for couples at an Albuquerque center

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – Kids at the North Domingo Baca Multigenerational Center planned an early Valentine’s Day for seniors, but this party had a few surprises.

“They came up with this really cool idea to make the couple’s marriage certificates,” Operations Manager, Tom Gallagher, said. “But it’s a surprise, they don’t know.”

Nearly 80 people showed up to the party, most of whom were couples, but they thought they were there for a dinner and a dance.

“We were surprised,” Marianne Baily said. “It was really neat and really special.”

Besides dinner and a dance, the center planned a surprise wedding for all the seniors.

“They’re going to renew their vows,” Megan Martinez said. “I think they’re going to like it.”

The kids at the center meant business. They created North Domingo Baca marriage certificates and for the ceremony, they were the witnesses.

“It’s neat for them to see that marriage works, I mean we’ll be 43 years this year,” Bruce Baily said.

Gallagher said the center is called multigenerational for a reason.

“We want these kids to be involved in things like this,” he said. “All the people who go here are great people, I’m very lucky.”

Mark Diamond’s Jewelers also donated a pair of earrings. Couples had the chance to guess how many M&M’s were in a jar.

The couple whose guess was the closest walked away with the set of earrings. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
