Albuquerque man accused of killing his girlfriend stands trial

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – The man accused of killing his girlfriend the day after he got out of jail went on trial today.

Jeremiah Gurule is facing first degree murder charges for the stabbing death of 22-year-old Elizabeth Brito in April 2010.

Officers say he killed her after getting out of jail the day before on a weapons charge.

Gurule later pleaded not guilty and tried an insanity defense, but a judge declared him competent to stand trial.

In court today our crews recorded the opening statements.

“Her living boyfriend, Jeremiah Gurule, repeatedly stabbed her until she could breathe no more,” said state attorney Dana Beisman

“His love for Elizabeth transcended, and he knew to call for help. He didn’t want her to die,” said Gurule’s attorney, Barrett Porter.
