One dead in robbery, shooting in Northeast Albuquerque

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – One suspect is dead and several others are on the run, after a robbery and shooting in Northeast Albuquerque.

Police were called to Jim Coad Rare Coins, near Eubank and Candelaria, at 3:02 p.m. after receiving a frantic call for help.

“There’s chaos, we can hear people screaming in the background,” said APD Spokesman Daren DeAguero.

But people in the area say the first sign of trouble came much earlier, from the coin shop’s alarm system.

“That alarm, you can set your clock by it, right around 5 o’clock, he does it every single day, so it’s very unusual to hear it earlier in the day,” said a witness, who didn’t want to be identified.

That witness said the alarm started blaring around 2:15 p.m.

“It kept going and going and going. Little later I saw the ambulance and fire truck coming around.”

APD says several suspects showed up at the coin store to rob it. Inside a scuffle broke out and the shop’s owner was hit in the head with a blunt object of some kind. But instead of giving up, investigators say he decided to fight back.

DeAguero said, “He was able to fire back a round at one of the subjects and he hit one of the subjects and there was blood everywhere.”

The other suspects scooped up the injured man and took off. He showed up at Lovelace Women’s Hospital a few minutes later in critical condition. When he was being taken in the ER, hospital staff discovered something strange.

“There were coins and gold bars falling out of his pockets,” said DeAguero.

He was taken into surgery and later died. The other suspects remain on the run, but finding them could be a challenge. Investigators say witnesses gave conflicting accounts of how many suspects there were and what car they were driving. People in the area say knowing they’re still out there is unnerving.

“It’s concerning that something like that would happen up in this area of town,” said a witness.

The shop owner suffered non life-threatening injuries. He is expected to be okay. He and one customer were the only people inside the shop when the incident started.

Late Saturday night investigators remained at the shopping plaza where the shooting took place and many shops remained closed off by crime scene tape.
