ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – Someone has claimed Charlotte the pig but it’s not one of the people who bid for her in the county auction.
Charlotte was found on the side of the road and taken to the Bernalillo County Animal Shelter and people have been hoping that whoever buys her saves her from the butcher’s knife.
The county says a resident found Charlotte on the side of a road in a burlap sack. Typically those animals go to the livestock board but the livestock board told the county it won’t take an animal that small.
In the time she was with the county no one ever claimed the piglet so the county did something unusual and held a silent auction.
Eight bids came in. The winning bid came in Tuesday at $700 and the new owner was supposed to be announced Wednesday morning instead someone else came forward.
Now Gallegos says the county is in limbo. He says this is a rare situation and they want to make sure they go about everything legally.
Charlotte will stay at the county animal shelter until everything gets worked out.
The county couldn’t say if the original owner was raising Charlotte to go to slaughter or why she was found in a burlap sack.
