ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – Bryant McClain has been around the sport of boxing since he was a child. His father Sean McClain made a living at the sweet science, becoming a World Champion along the way. Bryant had solid outings as an amateur. He was a two time Golden Gloves state champion in New Mexico.
“Every time I stepped into the ring as an amateur, I always had a little bit of nervousness,” said Bryant. “You just kind of harness it and use it in the ring.”
Bryant said it was time to make some money and with his father’s blessing, he decided to start his professional career Saturday at Buffalo Thunder.
“It’s like a dream come true,” said Sean.
Sean said he never pushed Bryant into the sport but, was ready to support him as soon as he decided to become a boxer. He hopes to use his experience and connections to help Bryant in his professional career. Sean wants to make sure Bryant doesn’t fight like him. Sean was know for brawling, taking and giving shots.
“I want to make sure he does not get hit,” said Sean. “It’s totally different the the way I fought before. There is a reason for that. I want to try to make sure that he doesn’t take the punishment that I took.”
Bryant said his goal is to one day become a champion just like his father.
“I want to be a world champ like my dad,” said Bryant. “To have that belt, to have that gold around my waist has always been a dream of mine too.”
