Albuquerque filmmaker gets national gig

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – A local filmmaker is getting a big break. It could boost his production company into the national spotlight.

Never in his wildest dreams did Albuquerque native Ariel Rakes think he would one day be shooting video where Olympic greats, like Michael Phelps, swam for the gold.

Rakes is the owner of 82/92 Productions in Albuquerque. You’ve probably seen his work featured in commercials for Wise Pies, Bosque Brewing Company, and more.

Recently, he got the call to fill-in as a Steadicam operator for one of the biggest swim meets this year where Olympians Phelps, Ryan Locate, Missy Franklin and Natalie Coughlin competed.

His job for two days was to run up and down the side of the pool to get steady shots of swimmers for the live national broadcast.

“Going to something that is completely live and huge like that where there is no real room to mess up was a real great challenge and a lot of fun,” said Rakes.

Rakes hopes adding the nationally televised event to his resume will help his company get more offers for bigger projects, including films.

“We are capable of really doing anything, especially with the Steadicam. That kind of gives our business an edge anyway. It’s a really neat opportunity that we are willing to just embrace,” said Rakes.

Rakes adds if his company gets bigger gigs that could mean more money for Albuquerque’s economy. This would be another win which is also helping Albuquerque jump to one of the top five spots for the best places to live and work as a movie maker according to moviemaker.com.
