Student section lacks attendees at UNM basketball games

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – The PIT has always been one of the most intimidating places to play sports and the student section is part of that, but lately it’s been a struggle to even get students to go to the games.

Fans are starting to notice more and more empty seats in the student section. Now the University of New Mexico is getting creative, like using “free food alerts” to convince students to take advantage of the free tickets.

Incoming students have heard rumors of the PIT time-and-time again. “I heard that we normally have a good team and that there’s always a lot of fans there and that it’s a good atmosphere,” Josh Kerr said.

But lately that hasn’t been the case.

“Coming here I expected more of a hype for the basketball team but people I know don’t talk about them too much,” Joshua Avila said.

“It was quite a bit of hype and then when I went I was just disappointed,” Kerr said.

The university is disappointed too.

Monday, UNM gave away Chick-fil-A grub outside the SUB to students, along with student section tickets. The tickets were for Wednesday night’s game against Air Force.

The university said 250 student tickets were given away on Monday. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
