REAL ID bill headed to House floor, representative lashes out

SANTA FE (KRQE) – A GOP sponsored bill to grant immigrants, who are here illegally, driving privilege cards instead of New Mexico driver’s licenses is headed to the House floor.

After a nearly three hour meeting, the proposal passed the house judiciary committee with a seven to six vote along party lines.

Under the bill, the state would be compliant under the REAL ID act, which the state isn’t currently. Democratic Representative Antonio “Moe” Maestas made some controversial comments during the hearing, mentioning the Holocaust in a reference to Donald Trump.

“If Donald Trump is the president a year from now, he will use this information to put human beings in boxcars and take them somewhere that they don’t want to go,” said Maestas.

Representative Maestas said the bill, which Democrats say targets immigrants, is something Trump would support since it would give information to the feds.

Republican Representative Paul Pacheco is the bill’s sponsor. He told Maestas he was speaking to him “like a child”.
