ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – A new poll shows New Mexicans don’t want to take away driver’s licenses from those here illegally.
Polling group Latino Decisions surveyed five hundred registered voters. Nearly 70% said immigrants here illegally should be able to get some kind of license.
“Here in New Mexico, unlike some of the narrative you see out there, New Mexicans are not in this punitive mindset towards immigrants,” said Gabe Sanchez of Latino Decisions.
The poll also found there was popular support for a bill approved by the senate last year which would require anyone who wanted to use their license to fly on an airline to get a special federally compliant license.
Governor Martinez now backs a proposal that would require immigrants here illegally to get a driver’s permit instead of a license.
The poll showed she has positive approval ratings overall.
