Police: Driver who shut down I-40 on Christmas Eve was drunk

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE)– State Police say the man who caused a Christmas Eve wreck that shut down westbound I-40 for hours was driving drunk.

Gerald Hernandez is charged with seriously hurting three people by rear-ending a car and causing a chain reaction crash.

Officers say paramedics smelled booze on Hernandez and he refused a blood alcohol test.

Court records show at least one prior DWI charge for Hernandez.
