Lobos struggle with perimeter defense

ALBUQUERQUE(KRQE) – So much for meeting an old rival. The University of New Mexico Lobos ran into BYU in round two of the Diamondhead Classic Wednesday and suffered their worst defeat in 9 years.

The Lobos 96-66 loss was a shooting exhibition for BYU guard Chase Fischer. He scored a Diamondhead Classic record 41 points behind 9 three point buckets.

As a team BYU were 16 of 28 from beyond the arc, the Lobos were only 5 of 12. The last time the Lobos lost by 30 or more points was in 2006 when New Mexico State rolled the Cherry and Silver, another rival.

Forward Tim Williams and guard Elijah Brown led the Lobos in scoring with 16 points each. With the loss the Lobos drop to 7-5. They will play in the 7th place game of the Diamondhead Classic Friday at 11 am mountain time.
